A jack of clubs was on the my side of the cracked wooden table face up for everyone to see, and I lifted up the face down card. I lowered it back face down after a good glance, and then slid in two red chips to raise the gamble.
"Betting high, are we?" asked a fat old man with his "wise" sadistic chuckle. I remained unresponsive as if I didn't hear a word he said. This seemed to anger him, and he slid in two red chips as well. The people around him followed his lead adding in a total of ten red chips making the pile 16 chips in total. The guy to my right folded early showing he had two red eights.
The deal was two places to my right, so the old man was the first to say "hit me". He looked satisfied with the results of getting the ace of hearts, and raised the bet one more red chip. This gave him an ace and a queen of diamonds face up. We all cashed in. The guy to his right said "hit me" as well, and busted with 22. He had an eight and seven of hearts, and received a seven of spades. The guy to my left passed, and I passed where the dealer than laid himself down a card.
The old man said, "Hit me". Who knows what he was thinking? He received a seven of diamonds. Oddly he didn't bust.
He got the card, but didn't raise the bet this time. The rest of us passed, and agreed to show our cards. The dealer had 19 (3 of hearts, 6 of diamonds, and jack of hearts), the old man had 20 (Ace of hearts, Queen of diamonds, seven of diamonds, and two of hearts), and the guy to my left had 20 (King of hearts and diamonds). I flipped up my face down card showing an ace of spades making 21, and claimed the first win of the night.
The old man only scoffed smugly. The others were quite impressed with the "newcomers" early win.
